Report on teaching science using virtual experiment
The lesson was carried out on the 19th October 2009 in Sekolah Rendah Katok A. We selected primary 4A pupils which consist of 10 pupils. The lesson was held in the ICT room. In this lesson, we have chosen to do ‘grouping and changing materials using virtual experiment.
The lesson was started with recalling the pupils’ prior knowledge which is done by one of our member, Mudianawati. The pupils were asked to name the properties of materials that they have learnt before. The pupils were able to name the group of materials namely glass, plastic, ceramic, wood, fabric, metal and rubber and also to give some examples for each group. Apart from that, teacher had also asked some questions by naming some of the materials and the students were asked to identify what the materials are originally made of. As an example, a wooden table is made of wood and tire is made from rubber.
The lesson continues with one of our member, Elma doing activity using the Interactive Whiteboard. In this activity, she was doing the virtual experiment activity from the website http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/scienceclips/ages/6_7/grouping_materials.shtml. Pupils were asked to select the materials and put it in the correct group. All of the pupils were actively involved and most of them managed to get the answers right.
Next activity is giving the pupils quiz which is based on the topic. This part of the lesson was done by me. I have to explain and rephrase some of the questions as some of the pupils are having difficulties in understanding the questions. For each questions, there were given 3 choices of answer. They have to select the correct answer from the list. Out of the 10 questions given, the pupils manage to answer 7 questions correctly.
As for the conclusion, Shamtinah have recapped the lesson by asking some questions to the pupils based on what they have learned on that day. Most of the pupils were able to answer the questions and do the activity well. Before the lesson ends, she interviewed the pupils regarding the usage of the virtual experiments. The pupils state that they enjoyed using the virtual experiment as it was new to them and they hope they can have such activity in the future.
